A few months ago, I wrote a post about the type of wine glasses that we use. The question that I asked is – does the glass matter? My conclusion was that it does. A nice delicate glass helps to enhance the wine drinking experience for me.
Another question that sometimes comes up when we are doing our First Crush events is the shape of the glasses. We use a universal glass for our tasting events – just to keep things simple but when I’m at home or a restaurant, I prefer to drink my red wine out of a glass with a larger bowl. Most restaurants with a decent wine list will serve white wine in a smaller glass and red wine in a larger glass. Why do they do this? It is because red wine has bigger and bolder flavors and when more of the wine comes into contact with the air, the wine is able to “open up and breathe”. White wines typically do not need to open up as much so they can be served in a smaller glass.
One thing to note is that you could go crazy with purchasing many different types of wine glasses – especially glasses for reds. You can choose a Bordeaux style glass, a Burgundy style glass or just a medium sized red wine glass. The true wine connoisseur might be able to tell the difference but for me – I just have one universal red wine glass to use at home. This keeps it simple and I don’t run out of space for storing the glasses!
